What Does Your Doormat Say About You?

When guests come over one of the first things people notice is the doormat. This is a good way to flaunt your personality and give a good first impression. Is it old? Funny? Elegant? This is often something people rarely think about, but the fact that people don’t think about it can say a lot about someone’s personality. A comparison would be what your shoes or clothing say about you.  These are all parts of our lives that say something about who we are, how we take care of our possessions and in-turn ourselves.

So what does your door mat say about you?  Are you stylish, comical, or do you not pay attention to those details.  It may be a lot of subliminal thinking but it all comes down to being a reflection of you. There’s a ton of different doormats out there and a majority of them can really make a statement about you. There’s some really sassy ones out there that you don’t see at a lot of people with these mats, but I bet you get a kick out of it when you do. There are also some really elegant door mats that can be up to 4 feet wide with a pretty monogram on them outlined with delicate borders.

Maybe it’s time to take care of these small details that show who we are.  A great place to look for that next accessory to your home is a click away.

5 Elegant Christmas Doorways

1. Natural Elegance

Adorn your door with cedar pinecones and unique twigs to create a rustic looking door that will make your guests think they’ve transported to a little cabin in the woods (and it’ll smell great too!). The pinecones hanging from the door can easily be replaced by a simple wicker wreath.

Mats that match: Personalized Pinecone

2. Christmas Basics

This is actually very simple, but is taken to another level when placed on a barn style house. Two of the main factors in pulling off this look are symmetry and color proportions, note how they haven’t overdone it on any of the three colors they have used.

Mats that Match: Simple Ever Green Santa Sleigh Mat

3. Christmas Fruits?

Apple, Lemons and a Pineapple? This is a super unique way to decorate your door and will be sure to make your guests smile (and then tell their friends about the awesome door decorations they saw the other day).

Mats that Match: Red and Green Christmas Bells

4. Huge Elegance

The yellow decorations and the lights really create a rich look, the upward pointing decorations make you feel like you’re walking into a winter wonderland, although the overhang at this house is quite high the upward pointing lights make it look even higher and this effect would also work on a house with a much lower overhang.

Mats that Match: Classy Monogrammed Mat

5. All Lit Up

This is a super simple way to really impress passer-bys.  All the designer has done here is just hung up white string lights vertically in an even distribution across the house.

Mats that Match: Retro Welcome Mat

Easy Tips for Decorating Your Home for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching and all of your family is going to be there, you want your place to look good but you don’t want to spend lots of money or time on it. This little guide will aid you in quickly and easily making your place guest ready.

The House

It’s important that you stick to a color scheme once you set that then you can pretty much pick up any little trinkets as long as you stick to your color palette.

Colors to keep in mind: dark reds, burgundy, any color of orange, and yellows. Mix up a range of these colors, think fall leaves. You could even go outside and grab a reddish leave, an orangey one, and a yellow one. Dry them out then put them into a Ziploc bag, refer to these leaves whilst out shopping for decorations, this will help you keep to the palette when picking up items.

Things to look for: candles, squash, throws (warm plaids can be kept around throughout the Christmas season as well), put a bundle of sticks into a vase, bowls of chestnuts, and silk flowers can pretty much be stuck on anything.

Place these where you see fit, coffee tables, mantles, counters, be sure not to overdo it, candles make great fillers in areas where you can’t fit much, but feel like something should be there.

The Table

This is probably the most important part, hours can be spent at the table during Thanksgiving, and it’s really simple to make it look beautiful. All you really need is a nice centerpiece, I am really liking the look of bunched wheat this year, and it is super easy and inexpensive. Stick your wheat into a small vase or tie it with thick ribbon and surround that with squash, chestnuts, silk leaves and flowers, and some candles.

Use colored wine glasses and plates, simple napkins, and place mats. Use a careful eye, and don’t crowd the table, all of your guests should have enough space for their plates, cutlery, and glasses.

The Door

Door is fairly simple, a single wicker wreath would do, you could keep that bare or grab some silk flowers and leaves, maybe some real pinecones, take a glue gun and attach them to the wreath. This is super simple and can look really beautiful.

A warm welcoming doormat is always a nice touch as well.

I hope these tips helped and good luck with all of your decorating; let us know if you have any other easy Thanksgiving décor tricks!

Why Sisal Mats are great for you and the environment

Why Sisal Mats are great?

Sisal Mats as the name suggests are woven from natural plant fibers. These plants fibers are called sisal fibers which are harvested from the leaves of a cactus plant named Agave sisalana that are found in Africa and Brazil. It prefers the arid desert climate as it is a cactus plant. This plant has been cultivated to make into rope and twine for its internal tensile fibers. This twine is now woven into sisal rugs or mats for the floor. Since the sisal fiber is used to make ropes it is stronger, more durable and resilient than any other natural fibers like jute, coir and hemp.

Sisal Mat

Sisal Mats have a huge advantage over other types of mats. First of all, sisal mats are naturally stain resistant hence we make our environment better for our kids, pets and ourselves by not using any chemical stain remover. Secondly, sisal rugs are very environmentally friendly products as you don’t need a chemical to clean it up as well as are made from natural fibers. Thirdly, sisal rugs are ideal for high traffic areas as they are stronger, durable and more resilient and do not show any wear and tear patterns. Fourthly, sisal mats are anti-static and do not built up static electricity on windy days and absorbs more sound than other carpets. Fifthly, sisal mats are safer for your homes as they are naturally resistant to fires.

Sisal Rugs are a smart choice as they have a unique feature that they can be tightly woven with other textiles such as wool or sea grass weave which can give these rugs the overall benefits of both these fibers. Usually people prefer a combination of sisal and wool which makes it more soft, warm and durable. Sisal Mats are also very versatile and gives a great textured and natural look to any office or home are and hence are a huge favorite of interior designers for their beautiful appearance. Furthermore, sisal rugs can be made even more beautiful as their edges can be trimmed in any fabric. The option for this fabric can be in various colors like blue, green, sandstone, black etc. to match the theme of your office or home décor. Homeowners love this customization feature of the sisal rugs. Sisal Rugs comes in a wide variety of color and weaves and hence offers a huge selection to the interior designers even for rooms that are hard to decorate.

Sisal rugs like other natural rugs are great for indoor air quality as they do not release VOC emissions which are usually associated with new rug smell. Moreover, sisal rugs, like the plant itself also release moisture during drier days or by absorbing the moisture in the air and hence regulate the humidity in the home. Since, sisal mats do not attract dust it also is good for people with allergies. Furthermore, sisal rugs can be backed with wool and cotton so as to make them stay on the floor and keep it safe from the coarse fibers of sisal. Sisal Mats are very easy to clean with a vacuum cleaner or with soap and water but should not be steam cleaned. Although sisal rugs are stain resistant they are not stain proof and if stains do occur, clean it quickly with soap and water or club soda and blot it out and dry with a hair dryer. Sisal rugs, however, cannot be used in areas of high humidity such as bathrooms or kitchen as they can develop water stains.

Our coco runners were recently used as an eco friendly alternative to red carpets at a huge fashion event in Vancouver, Eco Fashion Week. This was Eco Fashion Week’s third season and is one of the premier eco friendly fashion events in North America today. Our coco runners were used at four different media walls where plenty of celebrities, models, and fashion industry leaders posed on our mats for photographs.

Our coco runners are made from fibers found between the internal shell and the outer coat of the coconut, once harvested the fibers are soaked in a slow moving body of water until they puff up, making them easier to weave into mats. Coir fibers are tough and waterproof making them ideal for doormats. Most doormats today are made from coir, or synthetic coir.

Red Carpet vs Coco Carpet

Often times red carpet is made from nylon which contains toxins that can pollute the air and cannot be recycled. Last year the Environmental Protection Agency reported over four billion pounds of carpet found in the US’s solid waste stream. Runner, rugs, and mats made from coconut fibers are completely biodegradable and do not expel any toxins into the air, making them a much better choice for the environment and are quickly becoming the new must have decor item.

Coco runners come in a vast variety of widths and lengths and can be found on our site!

Halloween Door Decoration Tips

Well, it’s October. Time to start preparing for Halloween. We all know that the most important area of the home to decorate at Halloween is the front door, and coming up with the perfect mixture of spooky and welcoming is key. Halloween is supposed to be a fun time for kids, and decorations at the houses they are visiting makes it that much more exciting.

Preparing your door for Halloween can be done quite easily, for super basic decor this involves only three steps:

Step 1: Pumpkins. The more the merrier. All different sizes and styles. There are a ton of stencils out there you can purchase to aid you in carving the perfect goulish pumpkin, but it can also be fun to get creative and make your own scary face, and much less stressful, as a majority of the time with the stencils you have to be so meticulous and have all the right tools. When carving your own design all you need is a felt and a knife! Try to place these at different heights so that they light up a larger area, stick some inside your door too so that you don’t have to turn on any real lights making your door that much more spookier (or you could just get a bunch of candles).

Step 2: Cobwebs. Faux cobwebs can be found at practically any dollar store and they are so easy to decorate with, and just like pumpkins the more you use the better it will look. Hang it so that it is coming down and across the upper part of your door, cover your doorbell, and if you have a porch attach it from your house to your porch.

Step 3: Creepy Crawly’s. You know those little plastic spiders, that kind of look like real ones when your not expecting them to be there? Get lots! These will stick to the cobwebs on their own, but try gluing them to the pumpkins to make them extra spooky.

If you follow all these steps your door should look amazing, but if you are feeling super festive why not invest in a Halloween Doormat? This is a decoration that will last for years and years and your guests will be sure to fawn over it.

Have fun with decorating and send us some pictures that we can feature on our blog!

Adeline knew at a very young age that she wanted to be an artist. In her rural upbringing, animals, especially horses, played a very important role. Her entire working life has been dedicated to her career through experimentation, endless reading, and hours of practice.

A majority of Adeline’s work is also inspired by our equestrian friends, though she does enjoy paint a variety of diverse subjects – floral, still life, dogs, or a childhood scene. Years of riding and grooming horses has given Adeline  a knowledge of anatomy and muscle movement that her painting skills bring to life on canvas. Her artistic inspiration comes from the shapes and movement of the muscles, variety and texture of harness and trappings, as well as the horse and its interaction with its human counterparts.
