Coir doormats

A doormat welcomes people to your home while also giving everyone a place to wipe dirt from the bottoms of their shoes.

If you’re in the market for a new doormat or if you just want to upgrade from your current one, consider a coir doormat. They’re biodegradable since they’re made from natural components. They’re also affordable, and many styles and colors are available to help you say “welcome” in your own personal way.

What is a coir doormat?

A coir doormat is made from coconut fibers, an extremely strong natural fiber that’s woven together. Coir doormats originated many years ago in the coastal villages of South India.

Why should I buy a coir doormat?

A coir doormat serves two other purposes besides decorating a porch and welcoming guests. Its bristles are sturdy, making the mat strong for getting grime and contaminants off the bottoms of shoes before entering your home.

Because it’s made from natural fibers, you can add it to compost or recycle as opposed to putting it into a landfill once it begins to disintegrate.

What to look for in a coir doormat

Coir doormats come with or without a PVC backing. Unbacked mats allow water to drain more easily. They’re also more environmentally friendly than those with PVC backing.

Look for a coir mat with at least 1 inch of pile and that’s heavier than others. This is especially important if your coir doormat is located outside and exposed to harsh weather.

How long does a coir doormat last?

A well-made coir doormat can last 6-10 years if taken care of. Some natural shedding occurs within the first couple months of ownership, but you can just add the bristles to your compost.

How to clean a coir doormat

Brush, sweep or shake out your mat to minimize dirt buildup. Clean your doormat with water and a stiff brush, then lay it flat to dry. You can also vacuum your coir mat, but be sure it’s completely dry before doing so.

Coir doormat cost

A coir doormat costs $18-$60, depending on how well it’s made and if it’s customized.
